Program Description

This CPD module explores the value of self-managed glucose monitoring, including the evidence that it improves outcomes for people with diabetes, and how it can be best used to meet the three goals of the triangle of diabetes care.

Educational Objectives

After completing this activity, healthcare professionals should be able to:
  • Review the evidence that self-managed glucose monitoring has a significant impact on blood-sugar control for patients with type 1 and type 2 diabetes.
  • Understand that glucose self-monitoring is most valuable if it is performed in a structured way by motivated patients and reviewed periodically with their healthcare professional.
  • Know the separate components of good glucose testing behaviour.
  • Understand the benefits of multiple daily glucose readings for patients on oral diabetes medication, on multiple daily insulin injections or on insulin pump therapy.
  • Know that the biological feedback associated with SMBG readings impacts patient behaviour regarding their glycaemic control through changes in lifestyle and medication.
