Programme Description

This article, updated in September 2016 by Dr Nadia Yousaf, discusses the diagnosis and management of non-small cell lung cancer, including risk factors and classification, staging and managing the condition. Key learning points for GPs and other healthcare professionals are new developments, targeted therapies in clinical practice and prognosis.

Educational Objectives

After taking this activity, GPs should be better able to:
  • Describe the risks factors for lung cancer
  • Discuss the classification of lung cancer and how this has changed with advances in molecular analysis
  • Outline the current position with regards to screening for lung cancer
  • Recognise a possible case of lung cancer and arrange the appropriate investigation
  • Advise patients about the types of investigation they may be subjected to if lung cancer is diagnosed and the rationale behind each
  • Counsel patients with lung cancer about possible treatment modalities and be aware of those that are currently being developed
