Programme Description

Type 2 diabetes results from a range of risk factors that may be best managed with a multifactorial approach. There is a particularly strong relationship between cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, which should be considered in the management of the condition. This activity reviews the main trials supporting multifactorial management of type 2 diabetes, and draws on the recent LEADER trial to discuss effective management of cardiovascular risk in the disorder.

Educational Objectives

After reading this module, healthcare professionals should be better able to:
  • Understand the relationship between cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, and how this influences management approaches.
  • Appreciate the evidence for multifactorial approaches to type 2 diabetes management and consider effective management strategies for patients based on their risk factors.
  • Outline the main findings from important recent clinical trials in the field.
