Programme Description

In this article Professor Kevin Morgan differentiates insomnia from other sleep disorders and explains how to help patients to manage the factors that cause it. Key learning points for GPs and nurses include differential diagnoses, daily sleep diaries, cognitive therapy, hypnotic drugs and melatonin

  • Describe the epidemiology of insomnia and recognise those at risk of it
  • Explain to patients the predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating factors that lead to insomnia
  • Recognise co-existing problems such as obstructive sleep apnoea and restless legs syndrome
  • Diagnose insomnia using the International Classification of Sleep Disorders’ criteria as a guide
  • Discuss the management options of insomnia with patients
  • Manage insomnia using a stepped care management model
