What is MIMS Learning and how does it link to the Clarity & RCGP Appraisal Toolkit for GPs?

MIMS Learning is a clinical education website for GPs and nurses, with an accompanying monthly print magazine offering content from the website. You can organise your learning using the MIMS Learning CPD organiser and send evidence of your learning to your appraiser using our `Add to Clarity' feature. For full details of how to do this, see our guide

How do I look for learning materials on MIMS Learning?

You can either use the search function by typing your topic of interest into the `Search MIMS Learning' box or browse topics on our topics page. You can also check our learning plans on a range of topics including diabetes, cardiovascular medicine, paediatrics, mental health and dermatology.

What is a learning plan?

A learning plan is a bundle of educational content focusing on a specific area such as respiratory medicine or cancer, developed in consultation with MIMS Learning's GP advisers. They are worth 6-10 credits each. You can add learning plans to your CPD organiser, and undertake whole plans or modules within a plan, according to your learning needs.

What is MIMS Learning Essentials?

Subscribing to MIMS Learning Essentials enables access to a further 50+ hours of CPD focused on national clinical guidelines relevant to GPs - what's new and what to do differently in your practice. A MIMS Learning Essentials subscription provides you with 12 months of online learning and one-day live events delivered by expert GPs.

How do I use learning materials?

From the overview page describing the activity, click `Start activity' and read the article. You can also click `Add to queue' if you want to have the article in your CPD organiser to read later. After you have read it, click `Go to post-test' and answer the multiple-choice questions that you see. Once you have completed the test, click `Get results' and then `Go to evaluation'. You must complete the evaluation and click `Claim credits' in order to view and download your CPD certificate. Simply click the `Claim and view certificate' button when prompted.

How do I obtain my CPD certificate upon completion?

Your CPD certificate will be ready for you once you complete the post-test at the end of each learning activity.

Once you have completed the evaluation and clicked `Claim and view certificate', you will see a note that says `Thank you for undertaking this activity' and next to this, a `View certificate' button. Clicking on this button provides you with a personalised CPD certificate in PDF form. NB: You must complete the evaluation stage of the activity in order to be able to view your certificate.

How do I go back to find a CPD certificate for an activity I previously undertook?

Undertaking an activity automatically creates a reflective note in your CPD organiser – you can add your own reflections to this at any time. To find your certificate, click on `CPD organiser' and check your `Notes' for the title of the educational activity you have just completed. Click on the note title, for example `Chlamydia clinical review' as shown.

You will find your activity attached to the note under `Attachments', on the right-hand side (look for the red and white PDF logo). You can view and download your certificate by clicking on `Certificate'.

How do I request a copy of MIMS Learning magazine in print?

MIMS Learning is a new monthly magazine for GPs and nurses working in primary care in England, Scotland and Wales. Its content is sourced from the mimslearning.co.uk website. To request a copy click here.

CPD organiser

What is the MIMS Learning organiser?

The CPD organiser is an online resource allowing you to make notes about your learning, keep track of learning credits earned over specific time periods, store your MIMS Learning certificates and other useful documents, and export your reflections on your learning to your appraiser.

How do I access the organiser?

To use the organiser, you need to be logged in to MIMS Learning. If you have not already done so, please create an account on MIMS Learning. This will give you access to all the learning materials on MIMS Learning and to your own personal CPD organiser.

I've previously used the GP online CPD organiser - will I find all my details on MIMS Learning? Yes, providing you log in using the same login details as for the GP online CPD organiser. You will find everything that you previously stored in the GP organiser in the MIMS Learning organiser, and you will be able to use the new features of MIMS Learning.

How do I start using the organiser?

Once you have logged in to MIMS Learning, click on `CPD organiser' on the navigation bar. You will then see your personal dashboard allowing you to create and view your notes, see how many credits you have earned over a specified date range, add labels to your notes.

How do I create a note?

Notes are automatically created whenever you undertake a MIMS Learning activity. However, you can also create notes about anything at all - from a patient you've seen, to a practice meeting or peer group session.

From your personal dashboard page within your organiser (`My Notes'), click `Add a note'. Add a title, and enter your note under `Reflective note'. You can enter the CPD type such as `Distance learning' or `Peer group learning', and number of credits you have earned, which you may consider to be higher if you have demonstrated the impact of the learning on your practice.

At any time, you can click `Save and back to my notes' in order to save your note and return to your dashboard. You can add links to web pages, or attachments (in PDF format) to your notes.

How do I export my certificates and notes to my appraiser using the Clarity & RCGP Appraisal Toolkit for GPs?

Go to your personal dashboard page within your organiser (`My Notes'). You will see a blue `Add to Clarity' button underneath each note. If you have an account with the Clarity & RCGP Appraisal Toolkit for GPs, simply click this to export your learning to your current appraisal and your portfolio on the appraisal toolkit. Any notes you have written reflecting your learning will be transferred along with the type of learning, the number of CPD credits being claimed, and any CPD certificate attached to the note. To find out more read our full guide here.

There is also a simple export function, via a click on the tick symbol underneath the note. Click `Export', and a copy of the note and the associated certificate will be downloaded for you in PDF format.

How do I create a learning plan?

Click the `My learning plans' tab from within your CPD organiser. You can then create a new plan, or choose one of the recommended learning plans from the right-hand column. If you are creating a new plan, click `Create a plan'.

Next, enter a title and choose the topics most of interest to you, then click `Add'.

Once the plan is created, you will see it in your learning plan list, along with the option to `Search more activities' and add them to your learning plan. However, you also have the option to `Add to learning plan' when viewing any activity on the MIMS Learning site.

How do I manage my preferences?

Click on `My Account' to view your details and notification preferences at any time.
