Guidance: January 2015 update to NICE guidance CG181: Cardiovascular disease: risk assessment and reduction, including lipid modification September 2015 NICE quality standard QS100: Cardiovascular risk assessment and lipid modification

Dr Farooq Ahmad describes how to implement the latest NICE guidance on cardiovascular disease risk assessment and lipid modification in primary care. The module outlines what QRISK2 risk factor requires discussion about primary prevention with patients, which patients might benefit from starting statin therapy, what to do in the case of side-effects and how to manage patients with comorbidities.

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the January 2015 update to NICE guidance on cardiovascular risk disease and reduction
  • Know what to do differently in light of the guidance
  • Understand which QRISK2 calculation requires discussion with patients about primary prevention for cardiovascular disease in patients
  • Be aware of other factors that may predispose people to premature CVD that may not be included in calculated risk scores
  • Discuss the possible risks and benefits of statin therapy with patients
  • Outline which alternative medications might be used when patients experience side-effects
  • Know how to reduce CVD risk in patients with comorbidities
