Programme Description

Dr Jessica Garner describes the latest guidance from the National Osteoporosis Guideline Group (NOGG). The module outlines what’s new in the guidance and what GPs should do differently in their practice to diagnose, refer and manage patients with osteoporosis.

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the NOGG guidance on osteoporosis
  • Describe the clinical indicators that point to a diagnosis of osteoporosis
  • Know which patients should be treated without further investigation and which need referral for DEXA scanning
  • Carry out investigations to exclude secondary causes of osteoporosis
  • Give appropriate lifestyle advice to patients at risk of osteoporosis
  • Explain the benefits of calcium and vitamin D supplementation
  • Advise patients about different treatment options for osteoporosis
  • Carry out quality improvement activities relating to osteoporosis
