NICE guidance NG12. Suspected cancer: recognition and referral. June 2015.

Dr Tillmann Jacobi describes how to implement the NICE quality standard on the care of men with suspected or diagnosed prostate cancer in primary care. He also refers to the relevant aspects of the NICE guidance on the recognition and referral of suspected cancer. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, what to do differently in your practice, some areas of uncertainty/controversy, and information on some new and upcoming treatment options.

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the June 2015 NICE quality standard on the care of patients with suspected or diagnosed prostate cancer
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the June 2015 NICE guidance on the recognition and referral of suspected cancer as relates to prostate cancer
  • Know what to do differently in practice in the light of the NICE guidance
  • Recognise what symptoms would necessitate a two-week referral for suspected prostate cancer
  • List the different treatment options for prostate cancer
  • Inform patients about diagnostic tests, treatment options and possible side-effects
