Programme Description

Guidance: July 2016 update to 2008 NICE guideline on FH (CG71), 2013 NICE quality standard on FH (QS41), and 2014 NICE guideline on cardiovascular disease risk assessment and reduction (CG181).

In this module, Dr Martin Duerden reviews the current guidance on familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH), which is due to be updated in April 2017. The module covers prevalence, diagnosis, investigations, management and contact tracing of family members who may be affected.

This module has been updated to include information on updates to NICE guidance [October 2016].

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:

  • Understand the prevalence and importance of FH

  • Recall the criteria for diagnosing FH

  • Spot clinical signs of FH
  • Be aware of investigations and tests that should be carried out
