Guidance: NICE guidance CG90. Depression in adults: recognition and management. Updated April 2016.

Dr Toni Hazell describes an update to existing NICE guidance on depression in adults. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, which criteria to consider when making a diagnosis of depression, the different treatment options available for managing depression, when to review patients who are taking antidepressants and what to consider when treating patients with other medical conditions.

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the April 2016 NICE guidance on depression in adults
  • List the symptoms suggestive of depression
  • Revise their knowledge of how to diagnose different levels of depression
  • Know when patients with subthreshold symptoms or mild depression should be given antidepressants
  • Know when to review patients who are started on antidepressants
  • Advise patients about repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation
  • Discuss possible drug interactions with antidepressants
