Programme Description

Dr Suneeta Kochhar describes how to implement the NICE guidance on coeliac disease in primary care. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, what are the common symptoms of coeliac disease, which patients should undergo serological testing for coeliac disease and the management of coeliac disease.

A `useful resources' link to the relevant NICE quality standard was added in January 2018.

Educational Objectives

After completing this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Know what to do differently in practice in light of the NICE guidance
  • Recognise the possible symptoms of coeliac disease
  • Outline the diagnostic options for coeliac disease
  • Understand the importance of a lifelong gluten-free diet for patients with coeliac disease
  • List the annual tests that should be carried out in patients with coeliac disease
  • Describe the long-term complications of undiagnosed or untreated coeliac disease
