Programme Description

Dr Tom Howseman describes how to implement the first NICE guidance on challenging behaviour and learning disabilities. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, what to do differently in your practice, how to help identify the risk factors and causes of challenging behaviour in patients with learning disabilities, and some useful management strategies.

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the May 2015 NICE guidance on challenging behaviour and learning disabilities
  • Know what to do differently in practice in light of the NICE guidance
  • Be aware of how to identify those at risk and help diagnose possible causes of their challenging behaviour as well as learning strategies to manage it
  • Be aware of areas of uncertainty and controversy, such as the practical holding measures, while awaiting community team for people with learning disabilities formal assessment and support
