Programme Description

Dr Toni Hazell discusses the latest guidance from NICE on asthma diagnosis, monitoring and chronic asthma management. This module covers the differences between NICE and BTS/SIGN guidance, areas of controversy and treatment recommendations.

After reading this activity, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to GPs in the November 2017 NICE guidance on asthma
  • Understand the difference in recommendations between NICE guidelines and BTS/SIGN 2016 updated guidelines
  • Explain the role of a fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO) test, and its availability in primary care
  • Describe how to make a diagnosis of asthma in children who cannot reliably carry out objective tests
  • Discuss when spirometry should be offered, according to latest NICE guidance
  • Remember to check patients’ inhaler technique
  • Agree a personalised asthma action plan with patients
