Programme Description

Guidance: NICE quality standard QS115. Antenatal and postnatal mental health. February 2016.

Dr Carrie Ladd provides a comprehensive review of the NICE quality standard on antenatal and postnatal mental health. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, what to do differently in your practice, how to help women make an informed decision about their mental health during pregnancy and in the postnatal period, areas of uncertainty relating to women’s access to psychological therapies, and consideration of some groups of women who may require extra support during this time.

Educational Objectives

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the February 2016 NICE quality standard on antenatal and postnatal mental health
  • Outline what the quality standard recommends about prescribing sodium valproate to women of childbearing age
  • Have regular discussions with women with mental health problems about their treatment and how it might affect them or their baby if they become pregnant
  • Assess women’s emotional and mental health during pregnancy and in the postnatal period
  • Understand the barriers to women disclosing mental health problems during pregnancy and in the postnatal period
  • Help women make an informed choice about treatment of mental health problems during pregnancy and in the postnatal period
