Programme Description

Dr Toni Hazell describes the latest GMC guidance on confidentiality. The module outlines what’s new in the guidance, what to do differently in practice and considers situations in which breaches of confidentiality may be required.

After taking this module, GPs and nurses will be better able to:
  • Recall what’s new and what’s relevant to them in the April 2017 GMC guidance on confidentiality
  • List the criteria needed to rely on implied consent when referring a patient
  • Describe circumstances in which it might be necessary to disclose information for the protection of patients and others
  • Make a disclosure about a patient who is unfit to drive
  • Explain what to consider when breaching confidentiality for public interest reasons
