Programme Description

Kathryn Oakland provides an overview of the causes and management of acute gastrointestinal bleeding. Key learning points for GPs and nurses include the scoring systems used to assess the severity of bleeds, recognition of risk factors for mortality, and immediate action to take.

  • Diagnose acute gastrointestinal (GI) bleeds that require immediate hospital transfer
  • Recognise common causes of upper and lower gastrointestinal bleeding
  • Identify patients with haemodynamic compromise
  • Assess the severity of upper GI bleeds using the Rockall scoring system and the Glasgow-Blatchford system
  • Stratify risk in patients with lower GI bleeds
  • Understand when PPI therapy should be initiated
