Programme Description

This activity discusses the red flags and the differential diagnosis of febrile seizures

Educational Objectives

After reading this article GPs should be better able to:
  • Identify those at risk of febrile convulsions based on age, family history and past and current illness
  • Classify simple and complex febrile seizures
  • Describe possible causes of febrile seizures
  • Consider a differential diagnosis in patients presenting with febrile seizures
  • Identify red flags in patients presenting with febrile seizures
  • Initiate appropriate investigations in a patient presenting with febrile seizures
  • Determine which children need admitting after a febrile seizure
  • Advise parents what to do in the future to prevent or to manage further seizures
  • Provide parents with information regarding prognosis
