Programme Description

As GPs become more and more involved with palliative care, they are having to deal with more complex cases. Dr Pipin Singh discusses an end-of-life care scenario involving Mr S, a 67-year old man with hepatic failure. Learning points include discussions with patients and families around `do not attempt CPR’ orders and emergency healthcare plans (EHCPs). A sample EHCP is included.

Educational Objectives

After taking this activity, healthcare professionals should be better able to:
  • Consider potential complications associated with hepatic failure such as hepatic encepalopathy and ascites
  • Reflect on other issues around medication and nausea
  • Draw up an emergency healthcare plan for an individual patient
