Recently, out-of-hospital contracts in primary care have focused on providing more complex care for patients closer to home. As a result, ECG acquisition and interpretation has started to migrate away from hospital-based departments and into GP surgeries across any given locality. Whilst the potential advantages for patients are clear, the risk of expecting primary care to take on this great responsibility without adequate up skilling cannot be understated.
This module is based on Ealing CCG’s vision to improve stroke outcomes. As part of their strategy they commissioned:
ECG training for primary care with ongoing and unrestricted support from a local secondary care champion
A community-based cardiology service to embed specialist care within the GP surgeries of Ealing
A proven educational programme that had previously resulted in reductions in AF-related strokes in the West Midlands
This module complements a further module entitled 'AF detection and stroke prevention'
